Taking Time Off as a JDG in Poland: Your Guide to Breaks
Running your own business as a sole proprietor, known as a JDG (Jednoosobowa Działalność Gospodarcza) in Poland, offers immense freedom, but when it comes to taking a break, the rules are quite different from traditional employment. As a JDG, you are not entitled to paid leave (płatny urlop). This means that while you are absolutely free to take time off whenever you wish, you will not generate income during that period. Understanding this distinction is crucial for financial planning, especially when considering a longer vacation or a temporary pause from your business operations.
For those times when a short break isn't enough, Poland offers a practical solution: business suspension (zawieszenie działalności). A JDG can suspend their business activity for an indefinite period, up to a maximum of 30 years. The significant advantage of suspension is the relief from ongoing financial obligations. During this period, you are generally not required to pay monthly tax advances (zaliczki na podatek) or ZUS contributions (składek ZUS), which typically include social security and health insurance. However, it's important to note that while the social security part of ZUS is paused, health insurance contributions are often still required if you want to maintain access to public healthcare, though for suspended businesses, this can sometimes be managed on a voluntary basis (opłaca dobrowolnie).
Suspending your JDG can be a smart move if you're planning an extended trip, dealing with personal matters, or simply need a period to recharge without the financial burden of regular ZUS and tax payments. The process typically involves notifying the CEIDG (Centralna Ewidencja i Informacja o Działalności Gospodarczej), Poland's central register for entrepreneurs. Remember to settle all outstanding PIT/VAT taxes and issue any necessary KSeF invoices for transactions made prior to your suspension. Reinstating your business is also straightforward, allowing you to resume operations and associated obligations when you're ready.
